My Students
We are first grade scholars - individuals that come together every day to work hard, think hard and grow our brains to be the smartest in the second grade.
My precious first graders are from all around the city - each having the luck to win the lottery at our school to attend.
They are inquisitive, diverse, special individuals that are already understanding that to go to college, they have to be scholars every day in the classroom.
The 24 shining faces that come to school each day are making leaps and bounds academically, but not without struggle. 80 percent of my students receive free and reduced lunch and have to commute each day without buses to school. Learning for them however, is not a chore - it is something that they are inspired by, and it shows in the work they put in each day.
My Project
My students have been through 4 teachers in the past 6 months. They are not only needing attention, they also need resources to help them learn! Over half of the class is either pre-reading or reading on a kindergarten level, with big goals to "read like a second grader" by the end of the year.
We need TAG readers and books to go along with them, along with other materials like pocket charts and instant centers to grab their attention. They will be able to meet common core standards for first and second grades. With these materials, my first grade scholars will continue to quench their thirst for education.
My students prove every day that status does not determine the capacity to learn.
They are on track to surpass their goals and are on their way to becoming lifelong learners. A donation to our classroom would mean far more to them than any other gift they could receive.
More than half of students from low‑income households
