This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Kindergarten classroom is a place of discovery and magic. My students come to school to gain the foundational skills of reading, writing, and mathematics, as well as to learn to be great thinkers, wonderers, and problem solvers.

My students come from a low-income area on the South-West side of Chicago.

My school is 97% English Language Learners. More than 80% of my school's population qualifies for free and reduced lunch. My students face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, my students come to school each day eager to learn and give their best effort.

My Project

Kindergarten is a special year where children explore their world and learn how to be a successful student. In order for students to to master all the skills required in Kindergarten, they need room to think and grow.

Collaborative learning provides my students with endless benefits.

In order to collaborate successfully, my students need room to work at their tables. They are currently using tables too large for 5 year olds, or tables too small. Since there are too many at a table, they are unable to successfully interact and share.

My students would benefit from having more tables and more space to work. Fewer students at each table would allow for more time to talk with their partner. Fewer students would also mean they have more time to get to know their table mates and form a strong community.
