Scholarly Scientific Notebooks

My students need 300 hardcover composition notebooks and various sized post it notes to increase organization and scientific skills.

My Students

The truth is my students don't all come prepared for science and struggle with basic school ready skills.

My students are diverse, coming from dozen of countries from around the world as well as right from the very neighborhood our school is located in.

Our school contains almost 90 percent free or reduced lunch and about 25 percent special education students. Although this means many struggle, they are a privilege to teach.

My Project

For several years I have been using composition notebooks in science, inspired by AVID trainings many years ago. Not only have I gotten better at utilizing them but each year I see student growth in the level of work they put into them as well as test scores. Using a science notebook enable students to keep an organized record of the topics we cover in our semester long course. Students will use the notebooks and sticky notes to create what is called an interactive science notebook. It's NOT just a place to take notes! Yes, they will take notes in them but they also will use them to process their new learning. They will create poems, write summaries, draw images, collect data and many more creative activities that enable students to remember their learning.

I just ended my school year and asked a few student for their notebooks.

VERY few of them would actually give them to me even with the promise to return them in September. These science notebooks often become a work of art after a full year of learning. You will make a difference by supporting this project! You will be providing necessary supplies that will help my student be organized, increase science understanding and support long term learning.
