My Students

My students are curious, charismatic, and full of life. Although my students live in an under-resourced, low income neighborhood on the west side of Chicago, they show up to school every day ready to excel. My students love to learn and live to be challenged.

My students have overcome incredible obstacles, tragic circumstances, and insurmountable odds to become one of the most academically successful classes in our school's history.

My students embody excellence every day in their effort, determination, and resilience. They have a desire and dedication to learning that surprises me everyday.

My Project

Our school community has been through quite the roller coaster ride over the last two years and I've had my share of ups and downs as well. Whether teaching multiple grades or multiple contents or a class of 40 students, I've truly learned the importance of having the right resources and materials to help my students grow. Our school utilizes a common curriculum for our whole group instruction. This curriculum is rigorous and engaging, however it is only taught for 45 minutes a day. Our small group instruction (which is where most of our students see the most growth) is largely left up to each individual teacher and science isn't even addressed most of the time. The materials in my cart will go a long way towards providing my students with rigorous, engaging, and appropriate small group activities that give them extra practice and address their content gaps. These materials will reinforce both small and whole group learning while keeping students engaged and motivated to learn. I've also requested science materials as our school lacks basic science materials but I know our students would excel given the opportunity. Finally, I've requested a new classroom rug as the focal point for our morning meetings and community building activities. This rug will redefine our classroom library and make it a place where students can relax, focus, and engage in their work. My students are resilient, determined, and scholarly and they deserve materials that match their desire and curiosity.
