My Students
Do you remember the feeling of having your work hanging on the refrigerator? Imagine the power of that feeling when you live in poverty and when your school work is one of the few opportunities you have for pride and joy? That is the reality of my Kindergarteners every day!
My students reside in the largest and most violent public housing project in our city.
99% of our students receive free and reduced lunch, 85% of them come from homes with no father or male role models and all of them suffer from the effects of hunger, violence and chronic stress. For my students, school is a safe place of love, fun, hugs, and a place where they are valued, appreciated and praised everyday! My students want nothing more than to make their teacher, their friends, and their family proud. And they make all of those people proud every day! Despite so many obstacles, they show up, they work hard and they succeed! They have a love for books and writing that I've never encountered in my teaching career! They even wanted to take their book bags to field day so they could read between events. My students are thirsty for more opportunities to make us all proud!
My Project
My students need a color printer and scanner plus extra cartridges,to help us with our writing, reading and math! This printer will provide us with many learning opportunities! I am requesting a color printer and scanner for my classroom after being inspired by the "C2i" challenge. We plan to use the technology of a printer/scanner to make books to read, and to create learning materials for math and science. The more powerful use of these materials will be the scanner. The scanner will be used to scan all of my students' work and share it with friends, family and others in our school family. The students will be able to share their work on our class website which will become a limitless gallery for them to showcase their accomplishments. Sharing their work and receiving feedback will help them boost their self esteem which is a major hindrance to my students' achievement. IF they can receive encouragement and support from more and more people, they will continue to reach for the stars. And with your help they will reach their stars! We will also use the scanner and printer to provide copies of writing and art work to display at home and at school.
This project will show my students that people care about their success and that people want to see the work and art they create.
My students constantly ask to hang their work up in the hall and we quickly run out of hallways space so the scanner will allow us to display our work in the hallways of the Internet and allow 15 Kindergartners to continue beaming with pride in all that they do!
