My Students
Our class is comprised of 8 amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.
Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.
Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.
My Project
Our self-contained autism classroom runs on visual supports. Creating these visuals typically takes extended periods of time to create, print, laminate, and cut for continued use. We use visuals for all subjects including for math and science activities.
We are requesting a ScanNCut machine so that visuals can be made with ease and efficiency.
The time we will save with this technology will allow us to plan more lessons for our students to learn each day. The ScanNCut machine will allow us to cut visual schedules, daily classroom routines, and our other work. We will also be able to create symbols and picture icons for working on communication.
