My Students
I have an amazing group of students who range from English learners to highly gifted. I have watched my students grow confident in their mathematic abilities this year. It was not uncommon for me to hear them remark, "I'm not good at Math." Now they are sharing strategies and exchanging ideas. This project will engage my students in a real world problem while stretcging their mathematical skills and critical thinking. This problem based task will not only engage my students, but will create a life long memory from standards based learning.
My Project
Using blueprints of our school, the students will calculate the volume of the principal's office. This addresses our common core geometry standards that address scale and volume. The students, with teacher guidance, will then calculate the volume of a balloon with a 12 inch diameter. Based on their calculations, the students will estimate the number of balloons it will take to fill the principal's office. Finally, with permission of course, the students will be allowed to test their hypothesis for how many balloons it will take to fill the principal's office. This is why I am putting this class project on Donor's Choose. The theoretical part of the task can be handled easily. The practical application will require a lot of balloons.
