My students need the opportunity to experience, apply, and extend the Social Studies and Science curriculum by going on a field trip to the South Carolina State Museum and State House.

My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty Title I school, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Due to the unique challenges they face, I strive to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences every day.
Together, my students and I represent 13 different nationalities.
Many of my students speak English as a second language, and some only began learning English in August when school started. I focus on hands-on, interactive learning experiences so that all of my students can learn, regardless of their skill level. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on my students' potential and growth.
My Project
Experience is often the best teacher. Ms. E, my students' Social Studies teacher, and I are collaborating on this project. Our students have been studying astronomy and South Carolina history in their science and social studies classes. Although we have made models of the solar system and watched the movie The Patriot to keep them engaged, my students often ask, "Why do we need to know this?"
This field trip will help to expand their horizons and see how their science and social students content is relevant and applicable to the real world.
By visiting a planetarium, our students will be able to have an unforgettable glimpse of space. The observatory class will allow students to understand how technology is used in the real world to study astronomy and allow them to see what opportunities exist for future technological advancement.
By visiting the State House, our students will be able to see legislators in action by sitting in on a session and understand the importance of South Carolina history. Our students need to see and experience the world to fully understand the content discussed in the classroom walls.
Although admission to the SC State Museum and State House is free to all students and teachers, transportation is not. This trip will require two charter buses, and the cost is out of the school's, as well as my students' budget. Your donation will provide transportation to South Carolina's capital to allow our students to experience the world and fully understand the content discussed in the classroom walls.
