My Project
My students are English learners who love to talk to each other, but they don't speak well in front of an audience. In addition, as part of their annual language assessment, they must speak extemporaneously to a computer with no human giving feedback. It's not a natural-feeling task. So they generally perform poorly. But many young people today want to be Tiktok stars, so maybe that's our path to improvement!
In our own mini studio, students will practice speaking English in front of a green screen and get instant feedback from the recording about their performance--just like instant replays in sports.
We can work on body language, confidence, accent, and pacing, to name a few. And embedded in this exercise is the opportunity to grow technology skills as students edit videos to insert background images that can transport them anywhere they want to go in the universe.
Through this project, these middle-school students can build public speaking skills that will serve them well into adulthood, just as they are getting ready to move into high school. Starting with baby steps in the form of one-sentence performances and gradually moving to presentations, we will build endurance and self-confidence in speaking English, a gift that will last a lifetime.
