This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students I work with are a diverse group of curious learners, who are eager to share their ideas and needs, interact with their peers, and engage in classroom activities. They are learning to navigate the world around them, through paths that are not always easy. My students have a variety of disabilities and show up everyday with a curious mind and willingness to grow. They need support to communicate and reach their goals in all academic areas.
What if you had an idea, an answer, or a request, but could not verbalize the words?
Many of my students are considered non-verbal, or minimally verbal, as they do not produce words, and therefore require assistance to learn alternative ways to communicate. At my elementary school, we believe in providing learning through various functional formats that will prepare them for graduation, citizenship, and careers.
My Project
Several of my students are minimally verbal, meaning they require an adult to interpret and produce their message to others. These switches provide these students with independence and a way to express their wants and ideas. Students will be able to answer yes/no questions, make requests for items, gain attention appropriately, say hello to their peers, and answer questions during group work.
This project provides independence and a voice to children, who often rely on adults to communicate for them.
You are helping a child accomplish goals and to express their ideas, that might have seemed impossible at one point. You are helping to reduce frustration that frequently exists, by not being able to interact with the world around them. This project will provide access to functional and critical learning, that also serves as the building block for higher levels of communication. Even students, who are not directly using the switches, are impacted by this project, as it allows them to interact with their peers, understand their ideas, and work together in ways they previously could not.
