I am the proud and motivated second year teacher of an awesome group of third and fourth grade special education students. As their teacher, I am required to teach them English language arts and math skills. I am also faced with the obstacle of preparing them to take Louisiana's standardized tests, the iLEAP and LEAP in March.
Our school is located in southern Louisiana where we are still recovering from the damages and heartache left behind by Hurricane Katrina. My students, their families and the community around our school are still very much in the recovery and rebuilding process.
My students really struggle with writing and/or creative writing. Last year, one of the ways that I tried to encourage them to write creatively was to use old magazine or newspaper pictures. We would use the pictures as a writing prompt to write about. I also would take photos of the class and school and we would use them to write about them. My students really loved to use the photos to write. My student would ask me to take pictures of certain things, events or places for them to write about.
I am asking for a digital camera to use to take photos for writing prompts. I also want to use the digital camera as a method of connecting with my students and their families. Once we have the digital camera, I will allow the students to take it home and take photos of the families and friends. The student will be able to incorporate their real day to day lives with their writing. I feel that a classroom digital camera will not only encourage my students to write creatively, but it will also provide them with an opportunity to share about their personal lives.
Being a teacher is not just my job or profession, it is truly my passion, and I want to see my special needs students who struggle so much become the absolute best that they can become. It is only through your heartfelt, generous gift that I will be able to supply my students with a classroom digital camera that we need to become successful. I thank you in advance for your wonderful donation to my students as they recover and rebuild their lives.
