Our Pre-K ESE Varying Exceptionalities classroom is comprised of 12 boys (no girls, quite yet!) who are spirited and enthusiastic little learners. With disabilities ranging from autisms to severe developmental delays, our school provides them with therapeutic services such as speech therapies, occupational therapies, behavioral therapies, and visual therapies. While few are verbal, my paraprofessional and I seem to understand their patterns and ways they communicate. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and most are bussed to our unique program (Title I school).
My Project
These materials will help my students by reinforcing STEM skills, providing social opportunities in dramatic play (we will create a store to help students make “purchases”), instill a sense of responsibility towards money (saving vs. spending), and provide mathematical centers (sorting, counting, patterns). By introducing such skills, my students can potentially avoid money mistakes later in life and develop a financial future. My hope is to instill a love for saving, investing, and giving to others that encourage students to start a piggy bank or savings account with their parents and families.
