My students need scientific tools to conduct field experimentation. As Environmental Science students, the best way to understand the issues that face our planet is through hands-on experience.

My Students
Not every student in a science classroom initially believes that they could major in science and I have 180 days to prove them wrong. I believe that all of us are born scientists; curious and inquisitive. I design my classroom and curriculum to foster a passion for science as a body of knowledge and a never-ending quest to understand the world.
My students are exposed to hands-on experimentation, current event discussions/debates, and field trips to different environments.
I am passionate about science and sharing it with others and this guides what I do in the classroom every day.
My Project
Environmental Science may be one of the most relevant courses that a student can take. It can also be disheartening when each day's news is a reminder of the issues we all face. This often times leaves my students feeling helpless and powerless.
Hands-on field study and experimentation changes my students.
It empowers them to find solutions to environmental issues. The Carolina Kits provide the tools that bring my students out of the classroom and allows them to make positive change. With the gas impinger, students will sample from the exhausts of various vehicles (especially their own) to understand the types of chemical compounds that are emitted and their concentrations. This can be graphed and extrapolated to understand the impact of vehicles on air quality. The soil kit helps students understand that what is below their feet is much more than dirt. This is the topic that my students know the least about and yet has one of the biggest impacts on the food that they find at the grocery store. A soil exploration looking at samples from school, home, and the gardening supply store helps them understand the importance of topsoil conservation for the longevity of human agriculture.
These experiences are remembered long after they are done. Hopefully, their passion for the environment continues on because of their experiences in my classroom and out in the field.
