Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our charter academy is a diamond in the rough. We are located in Los Angeles, California and serve 361 students. Our students are predominately Hispanic, coming from challenging home lives, and we are a low-income/high poverty district, (98% of our student population are eligible for free or reduced price lunch). Although our students and their families face many challenges, we have built an extremely close community that goes far beyond the scope of a typical school. The parents are happy to contribute to the learning community in any way they can, and are actively involved in the education of their children, even though many are balancing multiple jobs. Our students come to school proud to be ICEF Scholars and are committed to success. I feel that it is my duty to ignite a love for learning in my students and to create lifelong learners.
My Project
This year I started Environmental Club at our school. The primary focuses of the club are to educate our youth on ways to live more sustainably, to develop a sense of personal responsibility for keeping the community clean, to raise awareness of the drought and other local environmental issues, ultimately creating youth who protect and care for our Earth. Each session students learn about a different topic such as the drought, water management, recycling classifications, waste disposal, ways to reduce one's carbon footprint, environmental pledges, etc. Each club session opens with a ten minute campus clean-up and each session ends with the students pledging to do one specific thing throughout the week to enhance the environment.
The biggest impact of all Environmental Club will have at our school will be developing and implementing a school-wide recycling program.
The students will use the bins and paint to create a place to collect recyclables in each of the classrooms. Volunteers from the club will collect and separate recyclables from every classroom at the end of each day. Proceeds from the water bottles and cans will go back to the club.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
