This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
H. Community School is a brand new, small but growing school, in the heart of Cypress Hills, East New York. The majority of our students are first generation Americans, growing up with all the trials and tribulations of being raised in an inner city. We are a Title I school and 91% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Our mission is to empower our students to become leaders so it is not out of the norm to see our students fulfilling roles such as Principal-for-the-day, teaching lessons, organizing field trips and designing their own projects.
My Project
As a "STEAM" (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) school we infuse STEAM themes into our literacy curriculum through the novels we read. In today's educational climate, students are often only exposed to whole novel experiences during their limited independent reading time. At HPCS, our humanities curricula are specifically designed with a central focus on the incomparable experience of reading whole novels. We then infuse themes related to social equality or social justice, using the novels to engage and motivate young readers and future citizens. Our 7th graders are examining water issues that will impact them in their lifetimes directly. Topics they will explore range from water scarcity, overfishing and developing innovative ways to aid people in purifying polluted water.
Our 7th graders will be reading World Without Fish to gain a deeper understanding of how significant overfishing is effecting us.
This book further provides the necessary examination of the graphic novel structure, which forms the basis of the 7th grade final project.
By inviting Mark Kurlansky, the author of World Without Fish, to our school, he will be able to discuss firsthand both conservation issues as well as the challenges he faced as an author while writing, illustrating and publishing this book.
Our goal for our 7th graders is that all of our students will be able to choose an issue they are passionate about and create a piece of literature that is both enjoyable to read and informative to the reader. We look forward to celebrating our student's publishing party with you!
