Saving One Tree at a Time Using Smencils

My Students

My students need a little motivation to kick start the year, and the sweet smells of Smencils is just what they are looking for.

I teach a wonderful group of fourth graders at a rural, Title I elementary school.

More than 50 percent of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch. My classroom is one that is diverse in learning styles, cultures, and interests. It is the varied backgrounds of my students that evokes wonderful classroom discussions and allows my students to learn from their peers' perspectives respectfully.

My Project

I believe all my students can learn but many of them need incentives. I plan on rewarding my students with a Smencil for being responsible, respectful, and hardworking learners. My students will not only earn a scented pencil, they will help our Earth with these recycled pencils. These pencils are made from 100% recycled newspapers, and they are biodegradable. My students will learn the importance of being responsible citizens for our environment as they save one tree a pencil at a time. My students will learn that it takes one cedar tree to make 172,000 pencils and just 430 newspapers to make 172,000 Smencils.
