My Students
This is a separate school that serves students ages 3 to 21 with severe intellectual disabilities. Many of these students have concurrent challenges such as autism, blindness, deafness, or physical disabilities. Families find it difficult to take the children out into the community once they have returned home from school due to transportation of wheelchairs and behaviors. Our focus is to provide opportunities for students to explore and develop independent functioning by addressing students’ individual needs. Through home, school and community involvement, we create an educational environment to maximize student success. Being the Daily Living teacher, I am fortunate to see all 144 students each week. Many students require hand over hand assistance to complete an activity and most are non-verbal.
My Project
Our students benefit from real-life situations and hands-on activities that they may have never had the opportunity to experience. Our population of student requires dozens of repetitions and hand over hand prompting to make the smallest progression. Many of our students are non-verbal and use picture symbols to assist in their communication. We will use the laminate sleeves to prepare these symbols so they are durable and can be used throughout the school year.
We will use the recycling containers to help in identifying the difference between each recyclable material (glass, paper, plastic) and our regular trash can.
Teaching our students the importance of sustaining our environment and the difference between a variety of products we use on a daily basis. The manners bulletin board will reinforce the characteristics we hope to instill in our students on a daily basis while here at school and out in the community.
If donations are fulfilled, students will be exposed to a variety of skills that are needed to maintain an independent lifestyle upon graduation. These skills can be adapted to make each experience successful for the individual ability levels of each individual child. This success will hopefully encourage every student to work their hardest in all areas of their life.
