We are a Title 1 Elementary School located in a high poverty area of Virginia. Our school has a population of 675 kindergarten through fifth grade students. Students face many challenges in their lives and our school provides them a place to be successful.
Our third graders are inquisitive and excited about new learning experiences.
They like to discuss topics with their classmates and welcome opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions which helps them expand their knowledge. It is amazing to watch their progress!
My Project
Who wouldn't love a Penguin Project Based Learning experience? Students in my third grade classroom will explore driving questions to find out why the penguin population is on decline and what it takes to rehabilitate a penguin.
This Project Based Learning experience will allow students to collaborate with classmates by reading books and researching penguins which will provide them opportunities for deeper learning.
Students will read nonfiction books such as National Geographic Readers: Penguins and Penguins and Antarctica and discuss what they learned with their classmates. This will help deepen their understanding of these birds. Also, they will read The Great Penguin Rescue to learn about a real world experience of penguin rehabilitation.
Reading the books requested in the project will put students on the path to find reasons why some penguins are endangered and how penguins are rejoined with their colonies after being rehabilitated. Students will be prepared for a "Save the Penguins" presentation to share at a school wide exhibition for parents and community members.
Students will immerse themselves in a Makerspace Arctic and Antarctic Escape Room challenge to gain an understanding of the dangers to penguin habits. It will help them understand the challenges faced in these environments and the impact on animals. Students will participate in a "Pennies for Penguin" drive to contribute to an organization of choice connected to endangered penguins.
