My Project
Middle school students have a very difficult time maintaining a positive attitude about themselves. As I walk around campus, I watch a lot of heads hang low. I see a lot of hoodies covering their faces as they walk into the building. As I listen during the hour of our after school program, many state that they cannot do anything right. As I listen in the lunchroom, I hear a lot of negativity about how they perceive themselves.
I would like to directly solve this problem through my community, outreach club in my after school program.
I would like to have the students in the club, pass out inspirational cards to students as they pass by them in the hallway. I would like club members to give their peers a piece of candy, with a kind message(promise) of hope, and remind them to smile. Club members will also encourage each other and other students. They will tell them that they are worth more than the test they just took. Club members will encourage acceptance of all students. Another way the outreach group will try to raise self esteem, is to stick a small, pre printed encouraging note in the locker of their peers, so that when they open their locker, they will know that someone is thinking of them. There are about 900 students at our school. I would love for each student to feel accepted, and worthy at least one time before the school year is over.
