My students need the supplies necessary (such as molds, wicks and pots) to make eco-friendly beeswax candles that they will then pass on to others.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What better way to teach students about the importance of bees than to provide them an opportunity to make their own beeswax candles?
I teach Biology in an inner city public school where over 50% of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunches.
There are no funds to purchase even basic supplies, so my students are unable to participate in activities that I have used in the past to help deliver a rigorous, college-prep curriculum. Daily life is often a challenge for many students, so textbook learning due to lack of materials only adds to their disenchantment.
My Project
Your contribution will allow my students to create beeswax candles that they will then pass on to others. This activity will be the "hook" that engages students in an examination of the importance of bees as pollinators. This basic service provided by bees is rarely understood by my students. Their newfound knowledge will then be passed on to whomever receives the candles that they make, making this a project that spreads its impact far from the classroom.
Pollination is part of the learning standards for ecology, but also come up again during genetics as we review Punnet squares and heredity.
My students will forever remember the importance of bees, and the learning standards that they are associated with after they make and pass on their beeswax candles. Your kind donation will purchase the materials needed to continue this lab for years to come.
