Save the Arts ... and Marry Them with Common Core :-)
My students need tools (videos, art books in color, study guides) to find success in AP Art History, and Common Core resources to help them write about/analyze art

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students buck back hard against the numbers that represent them. Indeed, over 68% are on free or reduced lunch, and over 87% are labeled as a minority; however, that doesn't stop my peeps from achieving at the highest levels at my school as our "A" status for ten years plus shows.
My students come from real working class families, from all corners of my county.
Next year, I'm going to be allowed to teach AP Art History--new to both my school and to ME! Currently, we do not offer band, music, art or any other performing arts class, so to say that I am excited, ecstatic even, well, that would be an understatement. To prepare for this new adventure, I have, like the proverbial bull in the china shop, come out charging....my credit card, that is. First, register for the exam I need to take to add this certification? Check. Next, begin building a classroom library of resources beyond the textbook my school district will provide? Check. To rummage at yard sales, thrift shops, and at Goodwill for others' castaway coffee table books? Check. I'm sure you can picture it: frantic teacher trying to provide for her students what she knows they do not have at home--RESOURCES--because to succeed in any AP course, one must be prepared, prepared, and yes, prepared.
My Project
By using these books and videos, I will be able to "show" art from all over the world, and by my implementing fresh common core reference materials, I will bring a new AP class together effectively and professionally for art hungry students. With these tools, I can dig in with my students and we can travel through the centuries, immersed deeply in the arts. With virtual museum tours (by video) and with accurate beautiful representations of visual art from the books I have requested, I can bring to life the movements and "isms" so that my students can have a rich Humanities background as they step away from me, and into dual enrollment at our local college. Further, when coupled with the World Literature class I currently teach, holistic learning, rich in culture, rich in understanding, can breed curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. Combined with the rigor of common core, my students will be ready to move into life with a better understanding of where they come from, as a human being.
My classroom is open Monday through most Saturdays, and after school until sometimes as late as five p.m.
for students who want to reach higher, for students who need more help, or for students who just need to belong somewhere, and they have chosen my room to be that place. I can imagine the art discussions, the picture gallery walks, the animated discussions about what IS art, and the new, raw exposure that can challenge and inspire my peeps to further greatness. Art, indeed, can lead the way.
