My students need ukulele strings, ukulele picks, ukulele wall hangers, finger protectors, chord posters for reference, and 3V batteries to power our ukulele tuners.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love to be hands on, but when there aren't enough materials or equipment it is frustrating to them. "Music gives wings to the mind and flight to the imagination" but without enough materials, technology or resources their mind can't take flight and reach new destinations.
They come from an area of the city that is known as being the roughest and the students deal with too many adult problems outside of school.
My school works towards allowing the students to be kids and strives towards helping them to reach their potential and beyond in any way we can. All students are on free breakfast and free lunch and when they are able to become hands on in the classrooms, their hunger for learning becomes greater than their hunger for food.
My Project
Ukuleles are a part of my every day instruction with 6th, 7th and 8th grade music students. String wear and tear is normal, but we cannot keep the music alive with broken strings! My students need visual aides like the chord poster to help them when they forget a ukulele chord. Lithium batteries in our ukulele tuners can't last forever, so rather than worrying about the life of the battery, having replacements right away helps ease the tuning woes. Finger protectors and soft picks help students who need them to play accurately and successfully.
The power of music is evident when my students have an instrument in their hands.
When the instruments need some repairing, the students cannot unleash that power as easily. These materials will help to repair what is broken and will help us to maintain a supply of back up batteries, picks, strings, and protectors for our fingers for the future. Adding ukulele wall racks will not only keep the room presentable, but will keep the instruments safe and stored properly to ensure prolonged use for years to come.
