Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember creating your first work of art that you were truly proud of and bringing it home from school? Then I'm sure you also remember the look on your mother's face when she noticed you had gotten paint all over your brand new WHITE shirt?

Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area that is predominantly Spanish-speaking.

It is an area whose proximity to oil refineries causes health issues. Violence has recently been declining but it is still something to worry about. Our school is a place where the children can come and know that they are safe and protected. We strive to give them a place where they can learn without worry or fear. We are lucky to have Breakfast in the Classroom program, which feeds our children breakfast in addition to the free lunch offered to every child in our school. Even though the students in my class live in this type of environment, they come to school excited to learn and love to get time to explore exciting new materials!

My Project

In our class we like to paint. I don't often give them time for painting and opt more for cut and glue type of activities. All because I'm worried about their clothes. Whenever I do plan for painting, inevitably there is a child who gets it on their white uniform shirt. And while the paint provided by our district is labeled washable - we all know that white just doesn't come clean when paint is involved! In the area we live parents can't afford to keep buying new shirts so eventually they will come to school with stained shirts from the paint. I would love to be able to do more painting without worry and I KNOW they would too!

The donations to this project will allow my students to get more painting in during art time.

They have grown tired of endless glue activities - making glue dots, tear paper and glue, cut paper and glue, etc. They will be able to work with paint, mix colors, make a piece of art - something that they could be proud of and bring it home to a happy mom and dad - who will see that their shirt is clean!
