My Students

Save our memories! Do you remember what it was like when someone mentioned an event or a field trip and you couldn't visualize it? This happens all the time with primary grade children. I would like to have photos in albums so it will jog their memories about what they saw, experienced and learned.

My fabulous first graders are amazing!

They are sweet, smart, and incredibly ready to learn! They are like little sponges coming in each day ready to grow and understand even more about their world! My students are hard working first graders in a Title I school in a high poverty area in Southern California. Many families are single parent families and in families where both parents work, many hold more than one job. We are very limited in resources as we have been hurt by numerous federal, state and local budget cuts. I would like to have a new up-to-date camera devoted to and ready to use in my classroom.

My Project

In my years of teaching, I have found that the students often remember the "event" or "field trip" but they sometimes have difficulty recalling specific details. I try to put together small photo albums of these events to have children remember what they saw, experienced and learned. Oftentimes, children will be given an assignment such as "Write about your favorite experience or event during the school year." Children can pick from a list of events which I write on the board. If they have difficulty in writing or remembering the specific event, they can go get the photo album to help them in their writing. Our last classroom camera broke, so now I do not have a classroom camera to use to capture these "moments." I would like to have a camera to be kept at school and ready to use at a moment's notice!

This project will support the students in many of their writing assignments.

Photos of important events, experiences and field trips will "jog" their memory and inspire their writing/drawing in their assignments. Since our population has a high number of English Language Learners, the actual photos will help them in communication skills and invoke vocabulary development in English, as well. My goal is to have several photo books that they can reference when completing their writing assignments.
