My students need a blender, screens, 5 packs of raffia, and other materials to make their own recycled paper.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you ever have the chance to make your own paper? This hands-on project will allow my students to truly understand the concept of recycling, as they turn old paper into new, beautiful cards that they will pass on to others.
I teach Biology and Physiology in an inner city/urban public school where over 50% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
There are no funds to purchase basic supplies, so my students cannot participate in lab activities that I have used in past years to help deliver a rigorous, college-prep curriculum. Daily life is often a challenge for many students, so textbook learning only adds to their disenchantment with school.
My Project
I would like to use these materials to instill in my students the value of recycling. They will take their own paper and turn it into beautiful cards that they will then pass on to others. I have done this activity with students in the past, and not only have they grasped the concepts of ecology, but they are eager to share their knowledge by passing on their personal, hand-made greeting cards on to other people.
By creating their own cards from recycled paper, my students will be able to fully comprehend the curricular standards of ecology, while developing personal ownership and stewardship for the health of this planet.
