Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In a brand new school, extracurricular activities are hard to come by, but high SAT scores are even harder. I work at an AMAZING high school dedicated to teaching inner city Los Angeles students every day and so many of them are talented, dedicated and ready to make a difference in the world.

I work with a group of students that do not have parents to help them through the scary and confusing process of applying for college. They take the SAT's because teachers tell them to, not because their parents do. They fill out college applications completely on their own. In particular, I work with a motivated group of students in a science club sponsored by USC called MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement)

The president of my club this year is applying to Brown, USC, UCLA, and UC Berkeley. He is qualified and intelligent, like so many of these students. Having a library of SAT and ACT prep books will help support the hard work of my students. It will not only help my valedictorian in MESA, but my regular students who do not know where to begin when looking at the SAT. I also want to help my musical and alternative learners with some unique SAT study guides designed specifically for them.

Imagine going to high school with no resources to prepare you for the SAT or going to college. What college should you apply to? What tests should you be taking? How do you fill out the FAFSA form? Many of us had parents to help us through the process. My students' parents have not even finished elementary school. You could empower my students to be the first in their family to attend college. Were you the first in your family? Then you know how wonderful of an achievement that could be. Thank you so much for your consideration.
