Sandy Space Force Launch Station

Help me give my students an astrophysics launch experience. They can use the engineering design process to build, iterate, and improve a sub escape velocity rocket.

My Project

Our students come from diverse backgrounds and have a strong desire to excel in Math and Science. We are an inquiry-based classroom with no desks (just work tables) and we are always building together. Students enjoy interactive experiences and discovering new ways to solve problems; we are a room full of young engineers.

Students in my room will be future aerospace engineers, software programmers, computer scientists, and will laugh at the phrase "It's not rocket science!" - because in their case it IS Rocket Science.

Last year our students built autonomous robots, Hot Air Balloons, used a micro wind tunnel to design efficient airfoils that could improve lift on an airplane, hand-built jet-propelled vehicles, studied Bernoulli's principles, Newton's three laws, and the Coanda effect, etc.

This year students will be able to calculate launch angle, altitude and extrapolate potential landing sites when factoring in apogee, delayed parachute deployment, wind speed, etc. They will also study the science behind solid rocket fuels, combustion, and propulsion with Newton's third law.
