Help me give my students opportunities for dramatic play and rich math learning experiences. The Math 4 Love Tiny Polka Dot cards are amazing for teaching beginning counting and sorting!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
These play pots and pans and dishes will invite emotionally relevant and relatable play opportunities for the wonderful kindergarten students in my class. I make sure to give them time for play every day because we know how developmentally important that is. With the beginning of the year, I want children to be able to play about their home lives (cooking and eating are such important and culturally significant topics!) when they choose to spend time at the sand table or in the dramatic play area. I have found this to be a good time for me to engage them in conversations about family and what they like to do outside of school, conversations that are integral to the relationship-building we focus on so much at the beginning of a kindergarten year.
I also love teaching math!
I am so excited to get started with this group on foundational math skills like counting with accuracy. I encorporate games and storytelling into my math lessons and, using the animal counters, children can work independently and show the "number stories" we talk about as a group. A particularly popular game is called "Sort the Cards" and we use the beautiful Math 4 Love polka dot cards for that one. Children in my class love the pop graphics and different arrays. Counting all the dots in a circle or in a scatter is a great challenge for them!
The students at our school are growing up in NYC just like I did and I want to give them the same amazing education I got in our hometown. I know these materials and know what I can achieve with students when we use them together. Please help me get them the education they deserve!
