Sanctuary Space Needed

Help me give my students this wonderful reading corner/sanctuary space. When children are comfortable, they are better able to concentrate on reading. Discomfort can lead to frequent fidgeting and breaks, disrupting the flow of reading and comprehension.

My Project

Today, teachers are seeing more and more emotional dysregulation with students often resulting in students being sent out of the classroom. A sanctuary space/reading corner in the classroom offers a designated area where students can calm down and manage their emotions. This can reduce anxiety, stress and behavioral issues, creating a more positive and conducive learning environment for all the children.

This sanctuary space/reading corner will be equipped with tools and resources to promote social-emotional learning, such as books about emotions, calming activities and mindfulness exercises.

This will help students develop essential skills like empathy, self-awareness, and emotional regulation.

Recognizing that different students have varying needs, a sanctuary space can make the classroom more inclusive. It accommodates students who need a sensory break or a quiet place to reset, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed.

By promoting a culture of self-care and emotional well-being, a sanctuary space/reading corner helps foster a supportive and respectful classroom community. This can lead to better relationships among students and between students and teachers.

Lastly, providing a sanctuary space/reading corner empowers students to recognize then when they need a break and take responsibility for their own emotional well-being, fostering independence and self-regulation skills. A sanctuary space supports the holistic development of third grade students by addressing their emotional and mental health needs, which in turn enhances their ability to learn and thrive academically.
