Saltwater + Plumbing = Amazing Box of Ocean

Help me give my students sea salt mix, replacement plumbing, and filter floss for their reef aquarium systems.

My Project

I can hardly believe that this month marked the ninth anniversary of our classroom's largest coral reef aquarium! The previous fall I had moved into our school's then-new science building of two classrooms in which the space, utilities, and climate control provided the opportunity to set up the tank.

After nine years of student arms in the tank, power outages, thousands of students' breathing causing ocean acidification, overfeeding of sea creatures, aquatic pests, equipment failures, neglect and lack of time for care, computer network changes ending remote monitoring, and COVID-19 school closure (tank stayed up!), our tank needs some extra care and renovation!

Topping the list is a proper fix of the plumbing of the main drain which requires a new, non-leaking valve and unions to make disassembly for repair and cleaning a snap. I am still unsure if we will start over with new sand and reef rock or do a summer of intense cleaning and rejuvenation. Regardless, we will need synthetic seawater mix and filter floss to allow for water changes and particle filtration on this and our other classroom tanks to carry them into the fall, when the new aquatic studies class will take on the tasks required to maintain reef tanks.
