My Students

Our second grade classroom is full of enthusiastic learners. We have a wide range of academic abilities as well as social emotional needs. We are fortunate enough to have many cultures blended together in our second grade class. Many students in our classroom receive various services such as but not limited to, Special Education, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language, ESL, Reading Specialists, Math Coaches, a weekly service provided by a license social worker. In addition to provided services, our class benefits from multiple movement breaks a day in order to actively engage in their learning.

In order to best meet students needs, they need to be given choices to take control of their learning.

Flexible seating allows them choice and fosters their ability to learn by keeping them engaged and motivated. By providing choices and helping our students figure out how they learn best, we will be creating an environment that encourages responsibility, problem solving, and collaboration.

As educational rigor continues to increase so do the pressures placed upon students. If students are required to sit for hours at a time, why not give them choice and let them be engaged?

My Project

Not only will these materials encourage and motivate our students to learn, they will provide them with choice and increase engagement. Students will be encouraged to try out multiple seating options before choosing which helps them learn best. Studies show that flexible seating increases attention, stamina and motivation. Students who prefer to stand will be able to work at standing desks with balance boards. Those who prefer to lay on their belly will be able to comfortably use floor mats. While students who prefer to be more active while learning will have the option to choose between ball chairs, bungee chairs, or stools. Finally, those that require more sensory feedback will benefit from the bean bag chairs.
