I teach 2nd grade at a New York City Title I elementary school where all children qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
My classroom is a diverse population of students from a mosaic of cultures.
My challenge is to differentiate instruction to meet the learning needs of such a diverse family of students who are in language acquisition and basic learning modes.
With budgets being cut, I'm reaching out to donors for help. I need everything including basic supplies for all content areas.
My goal this year is to create a dynamic and warm 2nd grade family where all my students feel free to express themselves and feel pride in who they are. As I tap into the talents of my students, it's important for me to have the supplies they need to create and learn.
You can make a difference by giving my students a wonderful new avenue for expression.
My Project
This year I'm creating a new ocean reading nook in my second grade classroom. My goal is to help my students navigate through the oceans of reading adventures in a more comfy area. Many of my students struggle with finding the right place to focus when asked to do independent reading. I find sitting in a hard chair all day very uncomfortable and I think if I can create a more comfortable flexible environment the children will be more open to my reading challenges. I have students with many different learning styles including Special Education. A more flexible classroom addresses the needs of each of my students.
I'm requesting Big Beanbag Chairs and an ocean themed area rug.
Students can either sit in the chairs or sprawl on the clean new rug. I'll also use the rug for group instruction throughout the day. My assistant many times sits one-on-one with students. Here will be a great place to go.
Your support of my teaching initiatives is so greatly appreciated. Thank you for your contribution to my project. Watch us "sail" into reading.
