My Students
We like to think of our TK-5th grade school as producing well-rounded, whole children who make healthy choices for their minds, bodies, and spirits. We teach them to care about achieving academically, pushing their bodies to gain physical strength, flexibility, and stamina, and finding joy in the performing and fine arts.
My 5th grade students strive to thrive with challenges that enable them to collaborate, communicate, be creative and critical thinkers who can make a difference.
Our community is very stable with many families who have a long history in the area. Other families return after college with their own families to attend this well regarded elementary school. In fact, some of our teachers on staff were once students!
Because we are a high academic achieving school, we often do not qualify for the same grant and state funding that schools of lower socioeconomic status would. This does not mean, though, that we are any less worthy, nor do we necessarily have the funds to provide the students with the complete opportunities we would like.
My Project
Close your eyes and picture your fifth grade classroom. Where was the teacher? Where was the board? Where did the teaching take place? My guess is that your experience was much like mine. Everything was teacher-driven from the front of the classroom. The teacher was the "sage on the stage". You and I turned out fine, I'm sure. But what if teaching could be different? What if students had the chance to take their learning deeper than what we experienced all those years ago?
Imagine a student-centered classroom where teaching and learning takes place throughout the room rather than teacher-directed from the front.
Mobile white boards with markers and erasers make it possible for students to collaborate, communicate, create, and critically think from anywhere in their classroom. Students take charge of their learning, get more choice while problem solving, and now their voice matters when they defend their solution. You want to be in that classroom, don't you? Me, too!
You can help me turn that image into reality. Today's learner has needs that are different from how you and I were taught. Education in today's classrooms must supplement rigorous curriculum and standards with soft skills such as empathy, compassion, perseverance, and accountability.
