My Students
My students are from a Title I school in rural Oklahoma where I also grew up. A large percentage of our students live below the poverty level and have rarely experienced the world outside of our local area. They need opportunities to gain new experiences with hands-on learning about the world outside our rural area.
COVID has provided new challenges for my students and my classroom: Moving from a traditional learning environment to one without pencil and paper has been good, but sometimes frustrating for them.
I know they have the desire and ability to learn and grow; they just need the opportunity and the tools. Exploring ideas in tangible ways is something my students enjoy and have a definite interest in doing. They understand what they need to succeed; they just lack the experience and the tools.
My Project
After an update to our school's safety procedures and training, my students and I believe that we need help preparing our classroom for dire events. We need to be able to move our large bookshelves in front of the doors or windows in the case of an emergency. These locking casters will make that possible.
We know that when the safety needs of our students are satisfied, they can concentrate more fully on learning.
Having the ability to barricade and make sure we have batteries for all of our flashlights will satisfy the safety needs that we can control in the classroom.
