My Students
Each year, I loop with my students to 5th grade after being with them in the 4th grade. I teach two blocks of reading and writing. My classroom is filled with a diverse student population. Ethnicities are numerous and poverty is high.
However, the kids don't see these statistics nor do they care, which is just how I like it.
We come together from all walks of life to LEARN! We enrich each others' lives just by being ourselves. We read about friendship, adventure, love, and even pain. We write about our experiences and emotions. We devour words and spill them out again.
My Project
In addition to teaching 5th-grade language arts, I supervise our building's Safety Patrol. Interested 5th-grade students sign up each year to help keep our elementary kids "Respectful, Responsible, and Safe." One of their many duties involves unloading students from their parents' cars each morning and then escorting students back to their cars at dismissal. Living in Oklahoma means this duty might be in the rain, sleet, or snow! The Patrol members willingly subject themselves to this weather, but I would love to provide some relief! I'm requesting 18 rain ponchos, 9 windproof umbrellas, 24 sets of green gloves, and 24 warm green beanies (green matches their Patrol sashes) to provide some comfort for these hard-working kiddos.
