Our school has grown by 200% in the past 5 years. We are in northern California in an area that is growing so fast and our schools are struggling to keep up with the growth. As a teacher, it can be challenging to provide the materials needed for so many students especially in a hands on class. I use the shop for teaching basic form, design, building skills, and for technology explorations.
Students who learn by getting their hands dirty excel in my classes.
Several of them can be students struggling in core subjects, special education students, and students who are at risk. All populations are represented in my classes.
My Project
These tools will help us utilize existing equipment in a safer way. These are tools that help secure and reduce risk of kickback on the table saw as well as giving us more precision and safety with the router we have. This will allow us to use it to make dovetail box joints among others. The safety jigs will make using the jointer much safer.
Students in the shop often shrink back from using the table saw, jointer, router, and planer and rightly so -they can be scary!
But these tools will help us to use them more effectively by implementing the use of featherboard jigs. There are also router jigs that we need in order to use the router for precision work and switch bits quickly. This will also give us a miter jig for the table saw so that we can cut miter for frames on the table saw. In addition our wood glue bottles are all dried at the tips and we need a better system to carry and apply the glue that will not dry out.
