This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"They tried to bury us. They didn't know we were seeds."
Our students are resilient.
They grow up in a city and neighborhood with an ill-reputed history of violence and crime. However, I'm more familiar with our students' goofy faces and big dreams than the violence. I'm more familiar with their families' hard work, warm welcomes, handshakes, and sharing of food than the crime.
The facts are: 87% of our graduates are the first in their family to go to college; 65% of our graduates are the first in their family to finish high school. Our students break barriers when they walk into our doors every single day by getting an education their parents weren't able to. Our students' "light bulb" moments mean so much more to us than you can imagine.
My Project
Boasting aside, my class is often my students' favorite class of the day. Science can be an incredibly fun experience with the right teacher, and I hope to be the right teacher for my students. I would like them to have more hands-on experiences with science as well, especially since often, up until their time at our school, my students have not had many valuable science-related experiences in or out of the classroom.
A chemistry/biology classroom with a proper safety kit will allow my students to come back next year to a fully-stocked, hands-on curriculum where they can run their own experiments.
My students will be able to take their learning into their own hands. They will have richer science experiences where they can see themselves as actual scientists, because I am allowing them to do the science, as opposed to demonstrating a science phenomenon for them.
These safety materials will guarantee that I am prepared for any mishap that my students or I will come across. We can do experiments and demonstrations with peace of mind if glassware breaks, chemicals spill, etc.
