As a teacher of children with special needs, it is my ultimate goal for my students to become as independent and confident as possible.
Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.
Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome.
Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.
My Project
The materials we are requesting are a safety symbols curriculum, community sorting center, and a set of books about community helpers. The safety symbols curriculum will help to introduce my students to important community/safety symbols such as exit signs, bathroom signs, street signs, and more. The curriculum not only teaches the signs, but will help reinforce the symbols and help my students to maintain these skills. The community sorting center and book set will help my students understand more about the workers in their community so that they can determine where to go if they are in need of help or a specific item. Ultimately, the skills my students will learn from these materials will help grow their independence, develop their confidence, and empower them and their families.
With huge budget cuts facing the special education programming in our school district, these materials will only be in my students hands with the help of outside donors.
Please consider donating these important materials to my incredibly deserving students!
