This may seem like a strange assortment of items, but I promise you, in the end, it makes sense.
Really, what I am asking for here are some items that will make my classroom safer (first) and more welcoming to my students (especially those with disabilities).
First, the door and window covers. Currently my doors and windows do not have any covering if we were to have an intruder drill or an actual intruder situation. This is a sad reality of modern teaching, but I need to be able to cover my classroom windows and doors to keep my students safe during such an event.
The light covers are for two reasons. First I loathe the institutionalized fluorescent lighting that schools have. A classroom should be a nurturing place that encourages creativity and peace. Not a cold, sterile (even clinical) room that makes one think they are being punished. Second I have many students with IEPs, most of whom are on the spectrum. Softening the lights in my room will help them adapt and acclimate to my room all the better. This will directly benefit both my Special Ed. students and my Gen. Ed. students by giving them peace of mind.
And, finally, Glade plug-ins and oil refills are just to make my room more homey and welcoming for the students. I am grateful that my students already see my classroom as a safe space, I just want them to feel even more at home here than they already do.
