My Students
Our school is considered a Title I school, with many students living way below the poverty line and many parents holding 2 or 3 jobs, and with 93 % of our kids receiving free lunch. These kids go through more than any adults should have to and yet they are 5yrs-12yrs old.
These kids are resilient yet remain kind and caring, they are leaders who want to learn.
They take care of one another and protect one another and are brilliant while they face tremendous challenges.
My Project
Creating a safe space is not easy nor cheap, but it's important. Elementary school kids are largely visual hence my desire to make the counseling office warm and welcoming. This community has a long lastly stigmatization of mental health and working to change that starts with the young ones!
Children need a bean bag chair to feel hugged when they feel like they are being picked on, children need to use finger paint to practice mindfulness so that they can identify feelings and relate it to behavior.
The school, once the largest in the district and one of the oldest in the city, has seen its population drop, mostly due to gentrification and competition with the many charter schools in the area and a prestigious private school across the street. However, education was supposed to be fair and equal therefore I plan on bringing this school back to life with updates for these kids, starting with a safe space in a cold unfair world.
