Help me give my students an S-O-S toolbox where they can have access to items that help them get through the day emotionally and physically - water, bandaids, tissues, chapstick, deodorant, sanitary pads, etc!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
An S-O-S cabinet in my classroom will allow me to house various items that students may need during the day. Many students struggle to focus in school because they are hungry or distracted by other issues that are taking place outside of the home. I want to eliminate these concerns. On any given day, a student may be in need of water or a bandaid for a paper cut. Maybe he or she forgot to put on deodorant or cannot afford it and now he or she feels awkward being around other students. With germs on the rise as winter approaches, students may want that extra wash with hand sanitizer. The SOS drawer can solve this, allowing the student to focus on their learning instead of their hygiene. It's possible that a student's lips or hands are chapped and cracked because they do not have lotion and chapstick at home, and now they are uncomfortable and struggling to focus in school - no problem.
With the S-O-S drawer, student's emotional, physical, and mental needs can be met and students will feel more confident in their ability to get through the day, regardless of what issues may arise.
I want students to feel safe and comfortable in my classroom and know that while learning is important, their social and emotional needs are a priority as well.
