Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are an incredible group of 6th graders who bring curiosity, energy, and heart to the classroom every day. They come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and many face challenges outside of school, but they show up eager to grow, support each other, and be part of something meaningful. What makes them truly special is their resilience and their willingness to try—even when reading feels tough. They deserve stories that inspire, reflect their lives, and keep them turning the page.

This project will provide our class with a full set of Ghost by Jason Reynolds, a high-interest novel that speaks directly to middle schoolers.

Reading this book together as a class will give every student access to the same powerful story, allowing us to build a shared reading experience filled with rich discussions, critical thinking, and connections to real-life themes like identity, perseverance, and personal growth. Having their own copy during our reading time ensures that no student is left behind and that each one can engage fully—following along, reading aloud, and participating in class activities without having to share or go without.

I developed my own love for reading in middle school, and I know firsthand how life-changing it can be to connect with a book at just the right time. My goal is to foster that same spark in my students—to help them see that books can be both powerful and personal. I want them to recognize that their voices matter, their stories are important, and that reading can be something they enjoy and connect with deeply. By bringing Ghost into our classroom, we’re not just working on reading skills—we’re building community, confidence, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. Your support will help make that happen.
