This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.
All of my students have special needs, many are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Multiple Disabilities.
Their communication skills range from non-verbal to just needing a few pragmatic tweaks. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well.
My Project
Our students need to be assessed each year to see their progress in their communication skills. Our school uses assessments previously purchased through Donors Choose very frequently. So much so we have run out of the data recording sheets that come with the assessments and we file in the students' files.
School staff often resort to making photocopies of published materials they run out of, not only is it illegal, but copies are often not as good.
Ethically and organizationally, it is better for us and for the students' files to have clear and proper documentation of their assessment results. This is best served by having the proper record forms for the assessments we use, the Test of Early Communication and Emerging Language (TECEL) and the Early Functional Communication Profile (EFCP).
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
