Running into Reading with Ghost (Track #1)

My Project

I cannot say enough about my students. As our first-ever sixth-grade class, they grew an average of 13 months in reading from September-May! This school year, I get to teach these amazing students again alongside 90 incoming sixth- and seventh-graders.

I would like to begin the year with a novel study of "Ghost" by Jason Reynolds, a National Book Award finalist that positively reflects my students.

"Ghost" is the story of Castle Crenshaw, who readers first see running for his life. When spotted by the coach of an elite track team, Ghost's natural ability earns him a spot on the team, if only his fears and insecurities don't mess it up. When asked about the book, Reynold's said: "We're more than our traumatic moments. We have as many triumphs as we do trauma."

Jason Reynolds aids students in falling in love with reading and writing through the power of narrative. As the National Ambassador of Young People's Literature, he showed students that storytelling is a way of reflecting, understanding, and validating oneself. "Ghost" is the perfect introduction to narrative techniques and model for students while composing their own narratives.
