This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is an elementary school that serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. Team sports are not readily available for all families therefore our after school running club is a great opportunity for our students to participate in sport.
We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.
Physical activity is important for all students because in participating in sports students do better in school. Our running club provides this opportunity to all of our students.
My Project
This is my 6th year as the running club coach for the school. It's an after school program in which Kinder through 5th grade students run every Thursday and Friday. Students track their miles and are awarded for every full marathon they complete. As part of our running club for the last 4 years we have sent a group of our runners to our local Los Angeles Chinatown Firecracker run/walk. Students who participate have a choice in running/walking the 5K course or 10K course. We'd like to continue this running tradition and this year we would love to send 25 of our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade runners.
Child development requires both academic, social-emotional and physical growth.
At our school we try to support all aspects of our students' development by providing opportunities such as these. The Firecracker is a great event for our students to participate in and where they all achieve. We win as a team for sending a group and each runner that crosses that finish line, no matter the time, is a winner. Running allows all of our students to participate in a sport with healthy habits and healthy competition.
