Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students' ages range in age from 4-12 years old. All students are enrolled in an elementary school located in Santa Clarita, CA. They live in a high poverty neighborhood, where 80% of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch.
The majority of our students come from low-income homes, these shoes will provide an opportunity for students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in outside sports.
These students are very active and always on the go. They love to run. New shoes would inspire them to run more. It's also proven that exercise improves cognition.
My Project
Our running club meets every morning. We have a nice track to run on but usually lack appropriate footwear. When I was sizing the children yesterday, a child had on shoes that were a size 5. He actually needed a size 7.5. With great running shoes in the correct size, students will be able to run in comfort.
All of the research shows that aerobic activity boosts academic performance and mental health!
My goal is two-fold, help students are active and fit AND help boost the neurons in their brains to improve their learning. By running 1-2 miles in short bursts during the day, they will be better able to focus in class as well.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
