My Third graders have been sitting on an old, stained rug that features the letters of the alphabet and the numbers 1-10. They deserve a clean, cheerful and mature place to meet and discuss their ideas.
Our student body is incredibly racially and economically diverse.
Our students range in ability as well, and our curriculum is highly differentiated to take all of the students' needs into account. We are a small public school in New York, in a landmark school building that has no hallways. The classrooms are separated by pocket doors, which has helped create collaborative and close relationships among all the teachers and the students.
My Project
We begin each day with morning meetings at the rug. Every lesson begins with a meeting on our rug. Lessons that require the Smartboard or the whiteboard take place on the rug. I meet with small groups for instruction at the rug. The children play Math games and read on the rug. The rug is the heart of our classroom.
Unfortunately, our rug is very old and dirty. Daily vacuuming and professional steam cleanings have not been able to remove the traces of years of use.
The current rug was designed for First graders.
Third graders deserve a rug that reflects their maturity. I would like a rug that is cheerful, but calming, a rug that does not distract but that enhances the classroom environment.
