This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The first time my husband saw my school he said, "There is no way you are teaching here." It was very different from my previous brand new school in the suburbs; however, when I saw my school, I saw opportunity and experiences that I would not soon forget. I had many biases coming into a school in a low income area; however, my students continue to amaze me. They come to school prepared everyday and eager to learn. My parents attend parent teacher conferences and the community works to support children. I have taught third grade at my school for two years and now I'm preparing to move to first grade.
My students live in a high crime area; however, I feel that my school is safe. Unfortunately last year perpetrators sprayed orange paint all over my carpet. The violence from the community has now leaked into my classroom. I would love a new rug to help cover the vandalism.
Your help will ensure that my students will not have to be reminded of crime in their community in the classroom.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
