Rug Burn? No, it’s Rug Learn!

My students need a new peaceful carpet to sit on as we share in community circle, morning meeting, for mini lessons in reading, writing and math. The carpet allows us to move and optimizes learning space!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are interested in the world around them. They are city kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, to write, to build and to read. They come into my class with little to no socialization, so we spend the beginning of our year learning procedures and how to be good students.

My students come from an impoverished background, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them.

Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in this first pivotal year of school.

My Project

The carpet is a pivotal piece in my classroom. It centers the room and is used often as we transition from table to carpet and back again. Many whole group and small group mini lessons take place on the carpet. We need space to work with our manipulatives or a place to turn and talk with a partner. We circle up for community building time every morning and at the end of the day we discuss our highs and lows on the rug before we dismiss for the day. The rug needs to be clean and soothing to the touch. It’s a safe space and a place where friendships are built. Learning takes place often on the rug in kindergarten. Kindergarten students notice everything about their environment and this peaceful rhyming rug will be a topic of conversation, a place to roll around and an area where open ended centers can take place. It will aid in creative play and give the students a space to keep self control of their little bodies. It’s soothing natural colors will be less distracting during learning time as well. This carpet will definitely make a huge improvement in our daily school activities.
