My students are bright, energetic, and oh-so-curious! These fourth and fifth-grade students come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and nationalities to form a special kind of learning community in my gifted education enrichment classroom in a small city in Mississippi.
Students come to my gifted class once a week eager to get their minds working and their hands dirty as we tackle projects that develop critical thinking, problem-solving strategies, and team-building.
I am fortunate to work with my students for two consecutive years, and that means I have to keep the learning new, fresh, and exciting. My students teach me as much as I teach them and I do my best to keep up!
My Project
The goal is to teach all of my gifted students how to solve the 3x3 Rubik's Cube. Learning to solve a Rubik’s Cube builds tenacity, develops a growth mindset, introduces productive struggle in an authentic way, fosters team building, and teaches content material. Students learn the importance of solving problems in a step-by-step manner, memorize and apply algorithms, and create their own solutions using pattern recognition, visualization, and spatial reasoning. These skills can be applied to math (algorithms, patterns, geometry), ELA (sequencing, following complex instructions), and other areas. One of the most rewarding elements for me is watching students push themselves to do hard things, coach their peers when they learned a new algorithm, and motivate themselves to practice outside of class because they want to get better.
